How do I install SynthMaster One and/or the Komplete Start for TriplePlay?
Can TriplePlay be used as an effective polyphonic MIDI controller?
Yes! TriplePlay uses a hexaphonic pickup to detect each string individually. This allows detection of multiple strings at once, including individual string bends. Playing chords is easy and TriplePlay takes it further with it’s Monitor Hand Position technology, allowing you to play chords without any pitch errors or additional latency.
Where can I find older partner software for TriplePlay?
The individual 3rd party developers of the software listed below have discontinued support of these products for TriplePlay:
- East West MIDI Guitar Libraries and Teaser Pack
- IK Multimedia SampleTank XT 2.5
- IK Multimedia SampleTank 3
- Native Instruments Komplete Elements
- Kontakt 5 Player
- Presonus Progression
- Presonus Studio One
The TriplePlay Software for Mac and Windows supports 3rd party plugins, but often those plugins can be updated, replaced, or discontinued. We do not have any control over 3rd party discontinued software plugins and are unable to provide updated activation codes for 3rd party discontinued software. If you are having an issue with a 3rd party plugin, please direct your support needs to the company or distributor of that software plugin.
WARNING: If you are trying to activate East West MIDI Guitar Libraries and Teaser Pack, IK Multimedia SampleTank, Native Instruments Complete Elements, Progression, or Studio One after January 2019, the activations will not work.
For further questions, please contact support.
Why are the East West MIDI Guitar Libraries and the Teaser Pack are no longer available?
The East West MIDI Guitar Libraries and Teaser Pack are no longer available. The original Play Software from East West has been discontinued and replaced with Opus. We are working with East West to ensure that the new Opus software will work well with the TriplePlay Controllers, but the TriplePlay software and TriplePlay libraries will not work with Opus at this time.
Please check out the other libraries that are available for free including the Native Instruments Komplete Start.

Can you record a song and save it to MIDI file?
Absolutely. TriplePlay controllers work very much like a regular MIDI keyboard, and sends MIDI notes to whatever device it is connected to that can receive MIDI. That MIDI can be captured in any DAW and saved for future use in other DAW’s or Notation tools. TriplePlay can even connect directly to Guitar Pro and send MIDI to create tablature.
Can I use it to control MIDI plug-ins in FL Studios?
Yes, TriplePlay is compatible with FL Studios.
What do I need to connect my TriplePlay to an iPad?
- TriplePlay Wireless requires a Lightning to USB adapter.
- TriplePlay Connect is equipped with a Lightning cable.
- TriplePlay Express comes with a USB-Type C cable that can connect to a number of iPads that are equipped with a USB-C port, otherwise a Lightning to USB adapter is required.
Note: When using a Lightning to USB connection kit, it is highly recommended to use adapters manufactured by Apple. 3rd party adapters do not always work correctly. We highly recommend the adapter that includes an extra Lightning port for continuous charging.
Can you use it with synth sounds From my daw or just with the preinstalled sounds From the app?
Yes. TriplePlay controllers work just like regular MIDI keyboard controllers with any DAW.
Is it possible to connect it to various other apps in ios, e.g. Garageband?
Yes. TriplePlay controllers work very much like a regular MIDI keyboard, and sends MIDI notes to whatever device it is connected to that can receive MIDI, which also includes synths and other apps such as Garageband on iPads and iPhones.
Does it come with the legacy sounds the original TriplePlay provided?
Unfortunately, no. The original legacy set of sounds was provided under a license that has since expired and is no longer available from those 3rd party providers. With that said, TriplePlay comes with a full featured version of SynthMasterOne with over 1,000 presets. In addition to that, there are a number of other plugins that are available to download for free that we have created patch libraries for in the TriplePlay Host software.
Will this work with 3rd party VST’s?
Absolutely. TriplePlay controllers work very much like a regular MIDI keyboard, and sends MIDI notes to whatever device it is connected to that can receive MIDI, which also includes 3rd party VST’s.
Can this be used as a MIDI controller with a MacOS and Logic Pro?
Yes. TriplePlay controllers work very much like a regular MIDI keyboard, and sends MIDI notes to whatever device it is connected to that can receive MIDI, which also includes Logic Pro.
Can you connect to a keyboard via 5-pin Midi to play instrument voices from the keyboard on the guitar?
Yes, but a USB to 5-Din interface is required. The best solution for sending MIDI from a TriplePlay controller to a hardware synth is the TriplePlay FC-1, a MIDI foot controller compatible with all TriplePlay controllers.
Other MIDI interfaces, such as the Kenton MIDI USB Host interface also work well with TriplePlay.
Does the TriplePlay Connect and Express work with computer programs or is it just made for the iOS app?
Yes, all TriplePlay controllers work with computer programs that use MIDI. TriplePlay Connect includes a USB cable and a Lightning cable for connecting to a PC, Mac, or iPad.
A number of people say that MIDI Guitar 2 is nearly as accurate as the TriplePlay, is this true?
TriplePlay controllers are equipped with a hexaphonic pickup that detects the notes of each individual string on a guitar. Along with Fishman’s proprietary pitch detection technology, this makes TriplePlay controllers the most accurate MIDI guitar controllers on the planet.
What is the smallest amount of latency using an android tablet or an iPad?
Typically iPads and Android tablets add 1-2 milliseconds of latency to the overall latency, a variation between 16ms (high string) and 23ms (low string).
Can you program Drums with TriplePlay?
Yes, you can program drums with TriplePlay MIDI Controller
Can TriplePlay register different MIDI CC’s when palm muted?
Palm muting on a guitar with TriplePlay will affect the MIDI velocity CC’s, but outside of MIDI velocity the TriplePlay can not send custom MIDI CC’s when detecting palm mutes…at this time.
How would suggest going about mounting the pick up on an arch top guitar?
TriplePlay controllers provide a bracket for the majority of arch top guitars that use a tune-o-matic style bridge. The bracket may also work with a tone wood arch top bridge, but depending upon the manufacturer of the bridge, may require adjustment for correct intonation.
Does it work with a nylon guitar?
TriplePlay uses a magnetic hexaphonic pickup, which requires metal strings to detect the pitch. There are some people who have used a preamp with individual piezo pickups on each string of a nylon guitar, and replaced the hexaphonic pickup on a TriplePlay controller. While a number of results have been successful, Fishman does not recommend modifying the controller in any way, and doing so would void any warranty or ability for future repairs by Fishman.
What if there’s not enough space between the bridge and bridge pickup to fit my guitar?
While we have taken great strides to provide a universal pickup that will fit any 6-string guitar, there are unfortunately a few guitars that do not provide enough space for the hexaphonic pickup. If this has happened to you, we recommend trying it on a different guitar, or contacting Fishman support.
Is TriplePlay Express different than the original TriplePlay wireless controller?
Yes. One uses a wire, and one is wireless. TriplePlay Express and TriplePlay Connect use a USB cable to connect to devices such as a computer, MIDI interface, or keyboard. TriplePlay Wireless uses a USB radio dongle that connects to devices the same way as a USB cable.
Other differences – TriplePlay Express and Connect have 2 buttons and a volume control. TriplePlay Wireless has 4 buttons, volume control, and a switch that controls the audio input of the guitar channel in the TriplePlay Host application.
Will an M-Audio uno(or the like) work with this to plug the MIDI directly into a synth, without any iPad or computer?
The best solution for sending MIDI from a TriplePlay controller to a hardware synth is the TriplePlay FC-1, a MIDI foot controller that any TriplePlay controller can connect to and send MIDI Din to a hardware synth. There are other MIDI interfaces, such as the Kenton MIDI USB Host interface, that allow for plugging a USB cable and sending MIDI Din to a hardware synth. The M- Audio Uno will not work as it has a USB-A jack meant for plugging and hardware MIDI synth into a computer.
Does TriplePlay Connect or any TriplePlay controller only work on 6-string guitars?
TriplePlay controllers are specifically designed to work on 6-string steel stringed electric and most acoustic guitars. They have been used on other stringed instruments, but Fishman does not guarantee specific results if used outside it’s intended medium.
Do TriplePlay controllers only work on iOS and not Android?
No, this is not true. TriplePlay controllers will send MIDI notes to play sounds on ANY computer, tablet, or mobile device. The TriplePlay Connect iOS app is a program designed to be used with TriplePlay controllers, and is only available for iPads.
How is the tracking on TriplePlay Express different than the original TriplePlay Wireless?
The short answer is that there is no difference between the tracking of the Wireless and Express or Connect controllers.
But, since the original release of the TriplePlay Wireless controller, Fishman has made significant improvements to the tracking of all TriplePlay controllers with a number of firmware updates to the controller, which are automatically installed when new software releases occur. These firmware updates have included features such as ‘Monitor Hand Position’ and tuning optimization for each string to provide the most accurate tracking of any MIDI guitar controller.
If you want to play Drop D, do you have to detune the low E string to D, or can you leave the E string tuned to E and convert it to D in the software?
To get the most accurate pitch detection, it is recommended to tune your guitar to the desired tuning, then match the TriplePlay Open String tuning to the guitar tuning TriplePlay controllers have a Transpose function that will transpose all notes a set number of semitones or octaves.
To detune MIDI notes from specific string, set the controller to Mono Mode, then transpose the MIDI instruments on the related MIDI channels, 1-6 for each string. This is for more advanced MIDI users.
Can you split different area’s of the fretboard and have the low E and A playing your own soft synth Bass sound and the top four string playing a Rhodes piano?
Yes. The TriplePlay Host software provides the ability to split the fretboard by up to 4 different quadrants on the fretboard. There are ways to send specific strings to specific synths using Mono Mode (MultiChannel Mode).
I do not own any Apple products. Can I get this product, open the box, attach it to guitar, and use it as a general MIDI trigger in a Windows system without issue?
Yes. Absolutely. TriplePlay controllers work just like a regular MIDI keyboard, and sends MIDI notes to whatever device it is connected to that can receive MIDI, including Windows.
Can i use with Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate products?
Yes. In addition, Fishman also provides a patch library in the TriplePlay Host app for people who have installed Komplete Start, which a is a free set of plugins from Native Instruments.
How is latency?
TriplePlay Latency Benchmarks
Fishman has put together a number of tests to show the different points of latency throughout the signal chain. The results of the tests are shown below.
Test results are determined by the following:
- Pitch detection time (ms)/latency
- Input/Output time (ms)/latency
- Hardware synth output time (ms)
Pitch Detection latency: latency of the TriplePlay controller from pitch detection to MIDI output
Variation between 7ms (high notes) and 14ms (for low notes)
Input/Output latency: usually lumped together and depend on the computer and the audio drivers
- IOS = average of 9ms (varies from 7-12ms)
- Mac or PC = varies from 3-14ms, depending on computer speed and audio interface. A Mac Intel i7 computer with 4gb of RAM and a Focusrite Scarlet resulted a better performance and less latency than the built-in audio output.
Hardware Synth latency: varies between 1-4ms
Overall latency:
- iOS = 7+9+2 = 18ms (high string) to 25ms (low string)
- Mac or PC = 7+3+1 = 10ms (high string) to 17ms (low string)
- MIDI Din or USB are typically 8-16ms
