Why Pickup Shape Matters

How magnet design impacts your electric guitar’s sound

At a high level, the heights of a pickup’s pole pieces affect how evenly each string is sensed, how the guitar feels under your fingers, and the attack and decay of single notes and chords. Staggered poles were originally intended to even out the volume of each string, but they were developed at a time when fingerboard radii were rounder and many players used a wound G string. Fluence staggered poles preserve traditional feel and character while incorporating slight modernization for today’s common string gauges and fingerboard radii. Flat poles prioritize magnetic balance, creating a more consistent field. Neither is inherently better; they are simply different tools for different players.

Staggered (Single-Width) Magnets

Why players choose them:

More vintage string balance
Some pole pieces sit higher or lower to mimic a vintage stagger. Each string sits at a more deliberate distance from the poles, resulting in a more vintage string-to-string balance. If you are a fan of early single coils, choose staggered poles.

Classic, familiar response
Our staggered poles deliver the sound and feel many players associate with traditional pickups. They are generally better suited to guitars with a rounder vintage radius, but on any radius, they provide the string balance expected from a vintage staggered pickup.

Best for:

  • Players chasing vintage tone and feel
  • Blues, classic rock, and roots-based styles
  • Traditional fretboard radii
  • Players who like a bit of chaotic string personality

Flat Magnets

(All magnets sit at the same height)

Why players choose them:

Optimized for modern setups
Many modern guitars have compound or flatter radii higher up the neck. Flat poles help maintain clarity and balance as players move across positions.

Better feel for expressive playing
Because no string dominates the output, bends, vibrato, and fast runs feel smoother and more controlled, especially for lead players.

Best for:

  • Players who want precision and clarity
  • Modern metal, progressive, fusion, and technical styles
  • Guitars with compound or non-vintage radii

Your ideal pickup magnet shape comes down to how you want your guitar to respond. Whether that’s the vintage-inspired feel of staggered poles or the precise performance of a flat design. Both approaches offer distinct advantages depending on your setup, playing style, and goals.
